Key West Bucket List

Pathway to the Ocean - Smathers Beach - Key West
Smathers Beach

I was asked by a friend of mine to recommend some places that he should not miss while visiting Key West. I figured I should share some of my local knowledge with the rest of you too. Below is a list of places that you should absolutely hit and maybe a few that you should avoid! After living in Key West for 3 years I have seen places come and go but the GREAT ones will always be here.

Food:

The Boathouse Bar & Grill – They have an awesome Happy Hour! Its from 4pm to 6:30pm and its half price appetizers and also half price draft beer, house wines and mixed drinks. I wouldn’t be on a first name bases with all the bartenders if it wasn’t good. The Lamb Chops are my absolute favorite … and I don’t even like Lamb!

Garbos Grill – They were featured on the show Diners, Drive In’s and Dives but I have loved them long before that. They only have a few things on the menu but I always get the Yum Yum shrimp.

Thai Island – Awesome lunch specials as well as really fresh fish. Personally I eat the JL7 Sushi Lunch at least once a week. You can’t beat it for $12.95!

El Siboney Restaurant – This place is loved by me and my husband. We get the  Siboney steak. Its a huge cut of skirt steak and you also get rice, beans and plantains. Bonus … they greet you with warm buttered Cuban bread.

Charlie Mac’s – They have some GREAT BBQ items and I like there Happy Hour as well!

The Chart Room – It’s actually a bar located inside the Pier House resort … you would never know it existed unless someone told you about it.

We tend to find the amazing food with a lower price point since we live here and actually work for a living!

Where to Stay

Poolside at The Marker
Poolside at The Marker

Pier House & Ocean Key Resort are located at the end of Duval St. Its a nice distance from the chaos of Duval St. but just a short walk – stumble depending on how much you drink!

The Inn at Key West is also very nice I LOVE their pool area but they are a short cab ride away and or drive if you have a car. Parking downtown can be a pain but it can be done.

The Marker – I have spent a lot of time at their pool and they are one of the newest hotels in Key West. I also love their cafe at the pool the Margarita Pizza if my favorite.

Activities:

Visit Fort Zachary Taylor State Park

Key West Butterfly Conservatory – When I first moved to the island I worked here and it was a great place, nice and peaceful away from the chaos of Duval St.

Visiting Bahia Honda State Park – (This is only if you have a car. Its actually a little ways north up the keys.)

Avoid:

Irish Kevin’s – Unless you are looking to be packed in somewhere, pay way to much for your drinks and never get to go to the bathroom at the risk of loosing your seat.

Dodge Dart 2016 – Product Review

2016 Dodge Dart White Car Review TORsAdventures 01

For the past week I have been driving a 2016 Dodge Dart around the South Florida area. I have to say that I was really not impressed with the car at all. Currently I have a 2008 VW Beetle Convertible so I knew things were going to be different but I thought I could find some cool features that my car doesn’t have.

My first impression was that everything seemed a little cheap. When wearing shorts or a dress the seat fabric actually scratches your legs. I connected my phone to the Bluetooth to take advantage of the hands free options because it said that my phone was compatible.  When I tried to use it the system it couldn’t seem to hold the connection to play music or make a call.

I do understand that this is a lower model car and I was not thinking that it was going to be like a Lexus or an Audi. With that said,  I do expect a little more since it is a 2016 model and it should have a newer feel to the car and cool new fabulous electronics. The rental only cost me $120 for the week but, the memory will stick with me for awhile. Next time I will choose a different car or pay for the upgrade.

After some research online I found some price specs and as I thought, this car it is at the low end of the car pricing scale. However, these days all new cars should be fun – AT LEAST FUN ELECTRONICALLY. Overall if this is your first car and you are looking for a good deal that has a factory warranty and new car smell this car will fit the bill but not much else.

Spring Fling

Sunrise, Beach, The King and Prince Resort, St. Simons Island, Georgia, TORsAdventures, Spring Fling

I am so excited that I just booked my Spring Fling trip. I can’t say that I came up with the name but it works for me! I will be going to the King and Prince resort on St. Simons Island. If you are not familiar St. Simons is a small island off the coast of Georgia. I have been there many times before but never in the spring time.

“The community and the island are interchangeable, known simply as “St. Simons Island”, or locally as “The Island”. St. Simons is part of the Brunswick, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area, and according to the 2010 census, the island had a population of 12,743.

Located on the southeast Georgia coast, midway between Savannah and Jacksonville, St. Simons Island is both a seaside resort and residential community. It is the largest of Georgia’s renowned Golden Isles (along with Sea Island, Jekyll Island, and privately owned Little St. Simons Island). Visitors are drawn to the Island for its warm climate, beaches, variety of outdoor activities, shops and restaurants, historical sites, and its natural environment.

Originally inhabited by tribes of the Creek Nation, the area of South Georgia that includes St. Simons Island was contested by the Spaniards, English and French. After securing the Georgia colony, the English cultivated the land for rice and cotton plantations worked by large numbers of African slaves, who created the unique Gullah culture that survives to this day.” via Wikipedia
