This started out as a great idea … My friend Alli and I were going to drive from Chicago, IL to Louisville, KY to see Kenny Chesney, Miranda Lambert, Sam Hunt and Old Dominion. What could possibly go wrong right? Oh, this is going to be a funny story! Alli picked me up at my parents house at 9:30 a.m., we stopped for bagels and we were on the road before 10 a.m. We didn’t really hit much traffic until we were about 20 miles from the Papa Johns Stadium and our hotel. After sitting in traffic for almost an hour we already knew were were going to be late to the show. We got to our hotel and went to check in and see where we should park. The guy behind the counter says oh just anywhere is fine! Um … sir … the only spot that is open is a handicap spot? He said oh it’s fine no one is going to tow you. Alli and I looked at each other wondering if we really heard the same thing … did this guy really tell us to break the law and risk being towed like it was no big deal? Yes he did … not the most professional way to start our stay. When we finally made it up to the room after he moved his car so we could be parked in a real spot we were disgusted by what we found in the room. This room goes into the top 3 of the worst hotels I have ever stayed at in my life. If we had had the time and the option to stay somewhere else we would have. They did give us the room for free but it might have been better to sleep in her car than in that dump!
We finally made it to the concert only to find out that Old Dominion and Sam Hunt were already done playing! The lady that was in line behind us said that that Sam only played 5 or 6 songs and it was a really short set. By the time we got a beer and made our way down to the floor Miranda Lambert had already played half of her set. I’m not the biggest fan of her to begin with and wasn’t exactly impressed with her set. Part of that could be that I was mad we missed the first 2 acts, our hotel was a shithole and that we finally made it to our seats in time to hear 4 or 5 songs. The floor was really a big open area and it was hard to see the person who was on stage without jumping up to get your head over the crowd. After Miranda was done playing we decided that we needed another beer and some food. Now let me remind you that we are at the Papa Johns Stadium before I go any further. We went to the concession stand and they told us they were sold out of pizza …. how does the Papa John’s Stadium run out of pizza? I didn’t think it was possible but hey why not… nothing on this trip had gone according to our plan so why would our food options? It is really ironic that Papa John’s Stadium was out of pizza. Sort of like the KFC YUM Stadium being out of Chicken!
I have seen Kenny perform in Chicago at Soldier Field with Tim McGraw and it was an awesome show so I was kinda looking forward to the same thing here. The show was alright… I could tell he was putting a lot of effort into it but I think nothing short of meeting him was going to make us excited after all of the crap that had already happened. WE WERE HUNGRY and tired! After the show we went to Arby’s, got some food, called our husbands and tried to sleep. We did not take our shoes off! We were both up really early. Not much sleep to be had in the gross hotel room so we were on the road home before 8 a.m.! It was a pretty good drive home just blasting the radio and watching the countryside fly by. I can’t say that I will ever go back to Louisville for a concert or anything else.
I will leave you with this photo of the Windmill Farm off I-65 in Indiana!
